Used Mailboxes in Campus Plaza - worked great (I think.)
Where to find fedex places in general?

tch vs ch.

  • Feb. 12th, 2009 at 10:40 AM
looking for words w/ the "ch" sound embedded (not spelled ch and pronounced otherwise, like cache or bach)

batch, catch, itch, bitch, hatchet, fetch, kitchen, stitch, latch, match, patch, ratchet, stitch.. tchaikovsky.
here's what i found using m-w.com (excluded words not in standard dictionary and words that are compounded from these root words):
wench, wrench, search, bench.
which, rich, niche, wench, much, inch, such,
beach, bleach, breach, each, impeach, leach, peach, preach, reach, teach.
beech, beseech,

any ideas of how to remember when to use what (like language of origin/ which is more common / usage / pronunciation)
guessed rules:
when coming after a vowel, tch is usually used, after an n, ch is used.

Resolution Revisited

  • Feb. 2nd, 2009 at 11:23 PM

So far so good, soda-wise.  I'll admit that I had soda twice, but these weren't out of a compulsion to drink it, more out of a sense of obligation and b/c I forgot.  Both times I was at the business-district Carl's, and both times I forgot not to order the combo.  Since the soda came w/ the combo, I didn't want to go back and change it, and I didn't want to just get water once i had the soda cup, and the juices they sell are probably just as bad if not worse than the soda.  I can't drink them, they're too sweet.  But we have had tempting soda in the fridge for about a month now, and I haven't touched it, even with my dad frequently asking if I'd like to split one w/ him.  Also, in other restaurants / fast-food stores I've been careful to order the water.

For some reason there is something about that Carl's that made me forget, twice.  It also shows the effect of the ease of saying a combo # on my ordering.  I used to think that combos were silly things and that you'd be silly to order one.  I though that people should just order what they wanted from the menu.  Instead I have fallen prey to the allure of simply saying, "#4 please."  This indicates to me that either a) my mind is going, or b) combos really do have marketing power, or c) both.  I think that there is either a pressure to order quickly from a line, or people are just fundamentally lazy in speaking or in deciding and so ordering a combo makes it simple, easy, and fast.  Might be a combination of any of those factors contributing here.  But I think I've veered off course here...

As for the rest of my resolutions, I'm working on them.  I'm up earlier.  Soon I hope to take advantage of the non-mountain-lion-inhabited hills and go for a few runs while i still can.  I would like to see the effect of that on my heart rate, both resting and fully-adrenaline-pumped.  As for planning, I'm still meaning to do this.  I have a vague notion of what I ought to be doing.  I feel I am fairly close to drawing up a plan.  I hope to have something ready by the move, like a new beginning.

I think that since I have no obligations, I can up the ante and make resolutions more frequently, like maybe every month.  The soda one was, I think, a really good one.  This month I would like to focus my attention on my acne, and getting rid of it.  Rather than taking my slow-going approach of trying one thing at a time, I think I will try everything I can imagine.  Once the acne is gone, than I can start diminishing my efforts and see what really matters.  Things to consider: diet (no saturated fats), showering (daily, like everyone else), facewash, acne medication, a good pillow-case washing, no picking/popping/touching, etc.  I think here I shall try to be as normal as possible hygenically speaking (or at least my idea of what normal is).  The idea is that if I act normal, maybe my complexion will be.  Hope it works.

Happy Chinese New Year.
It is, once again, the year of the ox.  (This will be my 3rd ox year.)

Does anyone else find it strange that there are 12 different years according to the Chinese calendar, and 12 months?  Why would they match like that?

Egg Flower Soup

  • Jan. 24th, 2009 at 7:31 PM
We made it according to this recipe.  Yum.  We probably should have added some chives or green onions though (I forgot the chives).  As suggested by many commenters, we did the corn starch first.

Dinner turned out really well.  I did the egg drop soup (which was incredibly easy since there was no chopping) and the rents made beef stroganoff and pear pecan salad.  As I suspected, the stroganoff was good b/c of the bouillon and flour.  The pear pecan salad is cool b/c you caramelize the pecans, and it has a yummy dressing.  The pears should have been a bit riper.  Maybe we could have added some cheese, like bleu cheese (as many pear - pecan salad recipes online seem to include this cheese.)  For dessert: Trader Joe's chocolate chip cookies, fresh outst the oven w/ ice cream.  All very good.

joining video files

How to do this for various file types?

mpg:
For mpg files, joining bitwise mostly works, but it doesn't get the video times correct.  (This is a clue into how the mpg files are encoded.)
From the command prompt:  copy /B "file1"+"file2"+"file3"+...."filelast" "destinationfile."

wmv:
don't use Open Video Joiner, it is trial software and won't work how you want it to.

Burning DVDs

  • Jan. 22nd, 2009 at 11:30 PM
Tried to burn .avi files to 4.7 GB DVD-R discs.
Noted:
-Windows stuff (WMPlayer, WDVDMaker, file transfer) didn't work
-avi files were 1.4 GB, but filled the disc.  Apparently the dvd video format yields much larger files for the same (I think) video.  I'll have to check out why this is, but I would imagine it is not compressed or something so that the dvd player can play it faster.

My attempts to burn w/ different softwares:
-Doing this w/ WMPlayer wasted a disc (didn't work in dvd-player or in laptop).
-Putting the files directly on the disc made it unusuable by a dvd player (but still usable by the laptop.)
-Windows DVD Maker said that the .avi files were not compatible.
-I resorted to the internet and found DVD Flick (download it here) (more detailed instructions on use here).
It worked well (2 for 2), and even has some menu features, however it took 3 hours to make each of the two DVDs.

I'd like the process to be a bit faster, and I'd like more control over the menu.
Some other software I might try:
- Roxio (MyDVD Basic 9) (had this on the computer.)
- DVD styler (free, supposedly supports avi format now)
- vso divxtodvd
- svcd2dvdmpg
- others, as recommended.

**Update 1/24:**
Tried Roxio (MyDVD Basic 9 (also MyDVD Express)). Not Free (I think it came w/ the comp.)  Doesn't appear to work w/ .avi files.  (Won't let you select them in the add movie menu.)  Keep getting video wave 9 error w/ wmv files, probably b/c I'm using wmp 11.  The error shuts down the whole process.  It appears to have good features, like the ability to change the menu, to preview, to add chapters, etc., but unfortunately I haven't gotten it to work yet.

DVDStyler appears to work with Vista (even though it doesn't claim to.)

**Update 1/25**
DVDStyler works, but for some reason can't fit as much on a disk.  What DVD Flick can fit on a 4.7 GB disk w/ room to spare, DVD Styler requires 6+ GB.  Another annoying thing about this is that it doesn't check the disk ahead of time to tell you if you've got the room on it.  You can figure it out, but I already made the mistake.  I like that w/ DVD Styler, it tells you what programs/commands it is using, and it is open source.  (It appears to include executables such as dvdstyler spumux, dvdauthor, mkisofs, growisofs, and dvd+rw-format, a few others, and a few dlls.)  The claim is that the styler is just a gui for these programs.

I'd really like to know what the heck is going on w/ what it's doing to make it into a dvd.  I believe DVD Flick calls ffmpeg to convert avi files to vob (video object / dvd) files.

Google Image Search

  • Jan. 17th, 2009 at 3:45 PM
I think the way it works is that it looks at adjacent text and the name of the image.
This is google's official answer, which basically says the same thing.
I'm surprised it doesn't allow you to tag things, or to mark things as inappropriate.
For instance, I was on safe search and found what I thought to be a highly inappropriate picture.  Now I didn't mind it, but my goal would be to improve the safe search by excluding this result.  There was no way to tag the image or to mark it as inappropriate.
This seems like a flaw in their web service, imo.

Cooking w/ Carol (A lesson at Sur Le Table)

  • Jan. 17th, 2009 at 1:30 PM
So, as much as I dreaded this 2 hour class @ Sur le Table... I think I may have learned a few useful things.

Most important of which, and something I had long been wondering how to do, is how to chop herbs.
I can't believe how extraordinarily easy it was to pick this up.  She had me going in under a minute.  That's all it took... and all this time I'd been wondering how the heck chefs did it on the tv.
All you do is get the appropriate knife (curved,) and the trick is that you hold the far end (you don't have to hold it down, just hold it in place) and use it as a pivort point.  Then just chop away!  My god it's easy.

A few other things I learned:
-Rolling limes before juicing them helps for some reason (although I could have sworn Christina had shown me this, but I had forgotten.)  Also using a fork makes juicing them much easier.
-It doesn't matter if pork is still a little pink in the middle after cooking. (Don't quote me on this, but that's what she said.)
-Pork is supposed to be cooked gradually as opposed to beef, so breading it helps to do that.
-I already knew this from trial and error, but how to chop an onion was reinforced.  (I was glad to see this is what I had come up w/.)
-How to roll up appetizers into triangles with filo dough (which looks more like tissue paper).  (Just like a flag.  One of the people at the table didn't get it at all.  I got it first try.  I was pleased w/ myself.)
-Not a good idea to salt beef before cooking... it draws out moisture.

We made a whole slew of things and at the end enjoyed the fruits of our labor.  It was quite yummy although unfortunately a bit cold.  I would like to make the pork cultets again, even though I didn't think I liked pork.

Details to pay attention to:
file size limit.
typical d/l speed.
time b/t d/l's.
CAPTCHAs
popups
d/l stability. (does it die sometimes? do you get to retry?)
available d/ler? - security of d/ler's? (How to check what information they send?

Host properties:
rapidshare - 100mb file limit (sometimes larger?), 15 mins b/t files after file d/l completed.  No CAPTCHA. No popups. DL stable.

netload.in - 400mb file limit. 1 hr b/t files, after creation of file.  claims not parallel d/ls, not quite true: as long as d/l's start 1 hr separated from each other, can d/l as many as like in parallel.  1 CAPTCHA.  1 or 2 popups.  DL stable

megaupload:
depositfiles - sometimes the link dies mid d/l! (DL unstable.

Downloaders / download managers for the above:
-try searching firefox addons for sitename.
-try googling sitename + downloader / download manager.
Possibilities:
USDownloader135.zip - Not sure what this is supposed to do, haven't tried it yet.
Internet Download Manager
FileDownloader.net
jdownloader
cryptload
FlashGot --> turns your d/l manager into one for firefox?
Rapidshare: Raptor works well (google raptor rapidshare download manager).  It has a few things that could be better, and the installation is in Russian, but it works.  RDown and other firefox add-ons may work as well.
Netload.in:  Since there is a captcha, I highly doubt there is a download manger for this, unless netload.in were to provide one.  One could possibly make one if one were to do what spammers do to get past captchas (I know how to do this in theory, but I won't put it in writing here.)  Supposedly there is a script w/ Greasemonkey to reduce the popups/captchas.
Megaupload:  There are a few firefox add-ons for this.  It doesn't claim to work for firefox 3+ though.  There is also supposedly a megaupload toolbar.  I've heard that's spyware though.
